YouTube Videos

YouTube Channel 1: The two video channels below I chose from the following YouTube channel.  https://www.youtube.com/user/TheNHSLibrary/videos

The Norman Public Schools Celebrates Your Freedom to Read video would be most helpful for students. This video would help students understand that they have the freedom to choose what they read. It exposes students to some authors and books that have been challenged.

The Video tutorial: Finding CC Images using Compfight would be most helpful for students. It demonstrates students how to find creative commons images. Most students are uploading images and pictures onto their devices and school assignments, but are not aware of copyright laws. This quick tutorial can be the beginning to learning about CC friendly images.

The Mini-Lesson: How to Register or Login to Easy Bib YouTube video would be a video students may like best. Students in middle school and high school are learning on proper citations on their school assignments and research practices. They would like this video because it teaches them how to log-in and register to Easy Bib site, which will help them to learn more on citing sources.

YouTube Channel 3: The two video channels below I chose from the following YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/pikesvillehslibrary/videos

The YouTube video, Hashtag Awesome School Counselor would benefit students the most. The video lets students know how the school counselor can be reached via social media. Perfect for students since many of them are members of social media. If they have an issue, but they don’t feel comfortable asking for help in person, then this way would be best.

The Hip Hop Day @ Panther’s Library YouTube video would be a video students would like the most because of its appearance. The way the video was made and the background music used makes the video interesting and fun to listen to and watch. It motivates students to learn writing techniques. It sure does look like the students had a fun learning experience.

YouTube Channel 4: The six video channels below I chose from the following YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/bbmsmedia/videos

Once I saw several of these YouTube videos, I chose the following as videos that would most help the students. It was challenging just choosing two. I believe that any of these six videos would benefit the students, as each one reminds students the importance of overdue books in a fun way. Also I believe students would like any of these videos since most of them are created with characters, lyrics, and background music they can identify themselves with.

Bring Back Your Books (Going Down Parody)

After visiting YouTube and exploring several of the library videos I’ve learned different ways I could implement YouTube videos to promote my future library. I may perhaps create videos of authors’ visits, library activities, and overdue library books. I might also create videos of read aloud sessions and library’s monthly displays. I could also create videos of quick mini-lessons on how to use iPads, iPods, Smart Boards, and how to access helpful technology sites. My favorite idea would be to create a video in which I could demonstrate the library’s resources, its special spaces, materials, and introduced myself and my staff. A good way to begin a school year is knowing your library, the librarian, the staff, and its location within the school.

Animoto and Book Trailer

Applegate, K. (2012). The one and only ivan. New York, NY: HarperCollins Children’s Books

About the Book

Winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller, this stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendship. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself.

Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.

The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In addition of timeless stories like Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan’s unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author’s note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events.

I created The One and Only Ivan book trailer on Animoto. I had fun creating it. Animoto provided me with the opportunity to take a tutorial before I created the book trailer. I read through the tutorial since this was my first time creating a book trailer. It was extremely easy to create but time consuming. It took some time because I downloaded and uploaded images I knew could be used to create my book trailer and that takes time and patience. Once you have all of your images downloaded onto your computer then Animoto uploads them from your computer files. Typing in the text was super easy and it only takes short phrases or sentences of up to 50 characters. I was able to delete images and slides that I didn’t like after I had uploaded them. It also gave me the option to rearrange my squares/slides in the order that I needed them to appear in my trailer.

I invite you to scan the QR Code below to view The One and Only Ivan Book Trailer:

QR Codes

I read on QR Code Readers and I downloaded a QR Code Scanner to my iPhone. I learned that “QR” stands for “Quick Response” and once you scan the bar code it really takes you to that particular site in a second. Furthermore, a mobile phone readable bar code can store e-mail addresses, website URL’s, phone numbers, plain text and anything with alphanumeric data. They are quick to download and are available to use right away. I visited QR Stuff.com in order to create my book trailer bar code. I followed these four easy steps:
        1.  Choose Data Type
        2. Content: Encoding Options
        3. Choose Foreground Colour
        4.  Choose Output Type
I typed in the URL website of my book trailer and within about 30 seconds my book trailer’s bar code was created and automatically saved onto my downloads on my computer.

Now that I know how to create QR Codes, I would like to use them in my future library. If my students don’t know how to use the photocopier machine, I can place a QR code on the copier for directions. If they are not aware that electronic databases might be a good choice for medical information, then I could place a QR code on the shelf near the health reference books. I can also place QR Codes on my library displays. Students/parents can scan QR Code of a book display and instantly have more information on the author and on the book. I will revise my library brochure and place a QR code on the front that links to my library's website. I could also create QR codes for useful websites or blog sites that teachers can use.
